John Sunia, Obituary Ventura, CA-Death: Beloved Resident Has Died

John’s life was defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of his community. His passing represents a tremendous loss to his family, colleagues, and all those who knew him.

John began his distinguished law enforcement career in 2003 with the Oxnard Police Department, where he served with dedication and distinction until his retirement in 2023 as a Patrol Sergeant. Over two decades, he held critical assignments as both a Narcotics Detective and a Major Crimes Detective. Throughout his tenure, John earned widespread respect for his investigative skill, professionalism, and collaborative approach. Colleagues and community members alike admired his approachable nature, fairness, and steadfast commitment to teamwork.

Following his retirement from the Oxnard Police Department, John continued his public service by joining the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office as an investigator. Assigned to the Ventura County Fentanyl Overdose Crimes Unit, he applied his extensive experience, knowledge, and interagency relationships to combat the devastating effects of the fentanyl crisis. His work demonstrated not only his professional expertise but also his compassion and dedication to protecting the lives of others.

A true hometown hero, John was born and raised in Oxnard and graduated from Channel Islands High School, excelling as a student-athlete in both baseball and football. His years on the field taught him discipline, perseverance, and the value of teamwork—qualities that became hallmarks of his professional and personal life. John later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice Management, further preparing him for his career in law enforcement and his lifelong mission of service.
